HISTORY
General Information
Key West is collection of islands and mangrove clusters on the southern tip of Florida.
A popular tourist area, Key West has many restaurants, clubs, beaches and shopping areas, as well as various arts, literature and culture related sites, such as theatres and galleries. The theatre has hosted both local and internationally renowned performers.
There are also opportunities to engage in activities related to fishing, diving, sailing and eco-friendly water trips.
Key West is also known as The Conch Republic and declared independence from the United States in 1982, in protest over border Control creating blockades whilst allegedly searching for illegal immigrants. The independence was a stunt by the people of Key West and achieved its intentions - sparking nationwide coverage. The Conch Republic still celebrate their ‘Independence Day’ every April 23rd.
Key West is known for how it has embraced bohemian culture - mixing Cuban and African American heritage and customs and celebrations. The area is generally viewed as accepting and open to other cultures.
